Health Careers – Medical Assistant
The Health Careers Medical Assistant program prepares students to assist physicians and other healthcare
providers in a medical office or clinic setting. Some of the core courses include CPR, First Aid, medical
terminology, anatomy and physiology, and an introduction to medical assisting.
More specialized courses include pharmacology (including administering oral, topical and injectable
medicines) and clinical procedures for selected disorders of each body system. Some of the independent
procedures the medical assistant performs include taking vital signs, obtaining a medical history, and
measuring height and weight. In addition, students will learn how to obtain and prepare blood samples for
testing, how to perform point of care diagnostic testing, and executing quality control on the testing
equipment.
