Securing Wireless Routers

Out of the box, wireless routers are plug-and-play (nothing to setup); however, the levels of security needed to protect you are not automatic. If your wireless home or office router is not properlty secured, do you know:

Pranksters can steal your wireless internet connection from your curb or office?

Identity Thieves can wirelessly steal and use/sell your personal or company information?

Pornographers and Child Predators can use your wireless internet connection to avoid Oklahoma Law Enforcement (and put you at risk)? Don’t be caught with your security down - what you don’t know can hurt you. You will learn about security terms, levels of security (basic, intermediate, advanced);and, how to tell you if you have security problems. Also, you will learn how to secure a wireless router, secure computers that connect to a router; and restrict access from drive-by thieves. After a class demonstration of all the above, students will work in teams to securely setup a router and test that setup.

Prerequisite: Computers for First Timers and either Intro to PC’s or Intro to XP; or equivalent experience (must understand using a computer/keyboard/mouse, windows, and the internet). Limited Seating. Please enroll early to guarantee a seat. Funded by the National Science Foundation.
